How to Fish the Werkbait

How to Fish the Mach Werkbait

The Mach Werkbait is a floating, shallow diving jerkbait. This finesse-style jerkbait is smaller in size to imitate smaller baitfish. “The Werkbait catches bass in shallow or clear water” explains Tyler Anderson. It doesn’t matter if you are fishing over shallow vegetation or pressured waters, this bait is built to catch fish in various scenarios.

It’s crucial to have the correct retrieval that will produce a darting action. “A jerkbait gets its name because of the jerking action you have to do to get the bait to dive down and move side to side. The standard retrieve is to jerk, jerk, pause and repeat it over and over” explains Anderson. Tyler points out that it’s important to remember that the longer you pause the lure during a cadence, the more it will rise up to the top of the water column.

“Don’t be afraid to test out different colors and let the fish tell you what color to choose” Tyler says. In clear water, stick to more natural colors. If the water is dirty, brighter colors can excel. Fortunately, the Werkbait comes in a variety of colors to match each angler’s needs.

For gear, Tyler likes to use a medium action rod because it is more forgiving. Sometimes, bites can be subtle and a heavier rod can pull the hooks out of a fish’s mouth during that time.
